Pet GPS locator equipment - which is the best please ? Today I saw the excellent thriller Firewall starring Harrison Ford. At one part in the movie there is a section which mentions GPS pet locator technology. The website in the film seems to be ficticious but after consulting the net the availabilty of such equpment seems to be all to real. However from what I have seen on the net the collars are very big and bulky. can anyone point me in the right direction to the smallest collars for pets, especially a GPS locator collar that would be suitable for cats. Actually, what I'm really looking for is something similar to the subdermal identity tags that you can get from any reputable vet for about £30 but taken one step further and instead/also incorporating a GPS receiver, thereby doing away with the need for a collar altogether - has the technology got this far yet or is there a line-of-sight issue with it being possible to have a subdermal GPS locator ? On either collar/subdermal GPS locator who would be the best manufacturer ?
GPS Navigations Systems? Ok I need some help. I want to get a GPS Navigation system put into my car.I really want to get a GPS put into my car. But I've been debating on which one is the best....In Dash?....Portable?....Laptop? Right now I have the Laptop GPS, and of course it is not touchscreen and you have to carry around this laptop (which is really nice to have because I didn't have one before. :) But lets say you go "Off Route"...the in dash and portable will recaculate and reroute you to tell you where to go, but the laptop does not, you have to do it manually. The laptop also has more options that you can put the time in and it will tell you the time that you get there. Does the Portable and In Dash also do that? At least with these, you don't have to use Mapquest anymore. Which is the best to get, does anyone know. Just need some help in which is best. I guess I thought they all had voice guidance because even my laptop Microsoft Streets and Roads GPS has voice prompts.

Using GPS Units from USA abroad? I am living in South Korea right now and am an avid trail runner and road cyclist. Not a lot of maps here for me to use. Well at least I haven't found really good ones like National Geographic TOPO. So I was thinking of buying a GPS from home and having it sent over here. However, I don't know if it will work? I am unsure about mapping software for maps of places outside of the U.S. Can I buy a GPS from the states and use it in South Korea? If so, where could I find mapping software that would work with that unit? Also, woudl anyone know about purchasing a GPS in Korea for my purposes? Thanks, M
To Gps or not to Gps? What if we gave an option to Reporters going overseas to install Gps units in their persona? Incase of a kidnapping. What if (tho unethical) but under the radar we install Gps units on terrorist inmates most likley to know high power people like Bin Ladin or second in command, why not release them. It would cause some sort of threat but what if that one guy leads us to him?

Why do people believe that GPS tracking is so simple? Okay, so it's a common belief that by using a GPS navigation system that people with access to the GPS system can track your whereabouts. I've heard this from several people. The belief even goes into the idea that you can be tracked via unpowered electronic indentification chips using the same system. The obvious question for this is how can something be tracked electronically if it doesn't transmit of a radio signal? Most GPS navigation systems are simply recievers of GPS satellite data, unpowered RFID chips simply bounce back a signal from a close range transmitter such as those found in shops that set off alarms when you walk out the door. There is no longe range intrusion of privacy incurred, in fact there is more risk of that whenever your mobile phone is turned on and transmitting a signal. Why do people think that by submitting themselves to GPS navigations systems, and even to ID chips, that their location can be tracked internationally? Are they simply misinformed? ed: I think you're talking about GPRS. That's a data broadcasting standard, not a positioning system. You're right about triangulation, that's what I meant about location via phone signal.
what is gps repeater? introduction of gps repeater kit using gps technology including the details of the kit such as coding, circuit diagram and block diagram and resource of this gps repeater kit.
GPS - do overcast days like in central ohio affect GPS? I tried a gps - it worked on and off, and I wonder if the weather can have a large affect on its ability to perform. The unit I tried was a magellan 300 roadmate. It cost 299.99, but I am willing to spend more on a reliable unit. Can weather cause the unit to not pickup a signal - is this common?
Looking for GPS software/help for my hobby? My hobby is metal detecting and I am looking for some mapping/plotting software that will let me input coordinates from a hand help GPS reciever and plot them on a map. Then I would like to be able to go back to these locations using the mapping. Keep in mind that I know absolutely nothing about GPS. Whan I find things with my detector I would like to "mark" the location. Is this a "waypoint"? Then I can go back to these locations for further study. I figure I can plot civil war troop movements this way and find more artifacts. I would also like to use it to mark out a search grid to make sure I am covering the area. I would also like to have the software on my laptop and a USB reciever. Is this what GPS is for/can do for me? If you could suggest an online tutorial also, that would be great. Am I going in the right direction with this?
GPS system? which one is the better system ? Magellan 300 GPS or the Magellan 360 GPS ? thanx

Why are GPS devices so expensive? Why have GPS devices stayed in the $400-$500 range? Most consumer electronic devices show steady price declines (even while increasing in quality), but GPS hasn't really. They've been around many, many years now, I would have thought it'd hit the $100-$200 price range. I know they keep improving the screens and adding memory. But you can buy a $100 PDA (albeit, not a high quality one). Is the GPS chip itself so expensive. If so, why?
GPS system for fishing in Philippines?? Can anyone point me to a model and brand name of a GPS device that will allow me to fish (without getting lost). I don't think the map function will be much help there, but the coordinates will be just fine. Or if there's any GPS that'll act as a radar 4 me to see fish down in the ocean.
GPS for Private Aircraft? My father is a private pilot who has his own biplane. He has no real avionics to speak of, and I know he'd like a GPS device for his birthday. I want it to be a surprise, so I've been trying to elicit from him what features would be most important. It sounds like he wants one that: --Tells him where he is in the air; --Identifies major terrain features, airports, cities, etc.; --Allows him to plot waypoints and to log a flight plan; --Bonus: one that identifies other aircraft in the air; --Bonus: one that mounts somewhere, so he doesn't have to pick it up and fiddle with it. While leading me to a website to do my own research is helpful, ideally I'd like to get some info from pilots who have used GPS devices they're recommending. Thanks!

How does a civilian GPS receiver accurately set its clock? Where is there a good description online? I've read the wikipedia.com entry for GPS and some of it just doesn't gel with me. Anyone have any pointers to a description online on how most gps receivers can calculate the correct time that an interested "newbie" would appreciate? I'm also interested how a gps receiver can discriminate satellites' C/A trains with multiple radios when all satellites are transmitting at the same frequency? Wouldn't all the radios (like on a 12-radio GPS receiver) be listening to exactly the same thing? Seems like they'd all be stepping on themselves and not be separable.
What are GPS navigators? In my german class, we are making presentations on technology today; and I don't know what to do! I've decided on two things: Graphic tablett and GPS navigator. Best GPS for the Money for rugged trail use and some city.? What is the best GPS for car use in the US? I'm planning to do a road trip across the US and plan to buy a top-of-the-line GPS unit. I would like something with touch screen, speech capabilities, traffic information, MP3 and bluetooth capability, etc. I will primarily use this for my car but I do have a motorcycle too. But I'd rather have a better car GPS than one that is car+motorcycle friendly if I had to choose between the two. Two models I am looking at are the Garmin StreetPilot 2820 and the Garmin Zumo 550. I'm leaning toward the Zumo 550 as it seems to be better than the StreetPilot 2820 in almost every way. Can anyone out there shed some light on why I would opt for the StreetPilot 2820 instead of the Zumo 550 or why I should go with a different brand/model? I'm a first-time car GPS buyer and have seen neither Garmin product in person. (All of the stores around here carry only the lower end models.) Thanks!
My Computer is not recognizing my GPS unit...? I have a Garmin GPS unit that connects to my computer thru COM Port. As far as I can tell I only have one COM Port (the 9 pin plug). When I first bought the unit I followed the manual and it worked fine...pretty much set itself up...(I am running XP) and I was able to tranfer map data between my computer and the GPS. I have not used it in a month or so and now when I plug it in, the program (MapSource) and the computer fail to see the attached device? I ran the troubleshooter and it tells me that COM Port 1 is working properly although it does not mention anything about the GPS device using it. I tried reinstalling the mapping software since this is where the drivers come from. Any help would be appreciated. And I am a computer dummy... so don't think I'll be offended by details... the more the better. Oh.. and I have already tried contacting the manufacturer, they have no idea. They tell me it is a computer issue not a GPS issue. Lots of help they were..
