***Right or Wrong..Parents tracking children with GPS on cell phones***?

April 23, 2006 — - Now, the same technology that's used to guide missiles and track criminals can be used to track your teenagers. Sprint Nextel has unveiled a new GPS service it calls the "Family Locator." For $10 a month, parents can know where their children are at all times simply by sending a signal from one cell phone to the other. The phone company stays away from words like tracking and monitoring, but critics say that's exactly what it amounts to. For nervous parents, though, it can be $10 a month for piece of mind

  1. I think it is wise... kids need to be kept under a watchful eye... some kids more than others.
  2. just give them liberty to use the cell phone they must be talking to their friends obviously
  3. I believe its a great idea giving the child has a pin that it can be turned of if they want the privacy
  4. Is it right? well, like the person above me say some kids/teenagers need it more than others, but ethically and morally, your children lose trust in you and may do other things behind your back. The matter should be discussed with them to let them know that you are doing for your concern and their safety. otherwise, you may get a backlash
  5. Well, this is one of those complex questions; the act of keeping tabs on your children at all times? What parent that has ever been has not wanted this? Of course that's not wrong. But, it might have a number of wrong side effects.; Some parents might rely on this as a sort of electronic leash and babysitter... leaving their kids and having a false sense of responsibility for them. Latchkey kids are now SatTrak kids. As a preventative for abduction? What would-be kidnapper (or worse) wouldn't know to remove the unit and place it in a location where the child is supposed to be, or putting it on a bus to Florida while they speed to North Dakota... thus giving them a very effective diversion and delay time. Again, false security. But by far, the worst effect, would be to train a generation of children that it's OK to have an electronic leash on you at all times.. where mommy, daddy, and big brother know at all times where you are and what you are doing. In two generations it will be mandatory to have one. One generation after that, they're implanted at birth. Teach your children well.....
  6. I got my child a cell phone and am resting a little easier now. It isn't because I don't trust her, it is because I don't trust the people out there! Just look at some of the sickos on this site!
  7. good idea - for reasons to numerous to mention
