Is it true that when your mobile phone is active, the sim card can be used in the same way as GPS?

In other words, can people with the right equipment, get coordinates as to your whereabouts?Do the police have the technology to do this?

  1. Its different technology. GPS relies on trigonometry from 3 satallites. The domestic system can narrow you down to 10 metres, the military system can get you to about 0.5 metres Your sim card reports on signal stength from all its adjacent phone masts. So from the various signal strengths the telephone operator can narrow down your location using trigonometry to about 100 metres. the police need the phone companies co-operation to review this data.
  2. ive heard this as well, unless you have a gps enabled phone, the only other thing is through GPRS
  3. Hmm...well let's say this. My friend has a Moto Razr with GPS and her mom has GPS on her phone also. My friends mother can pin-point right where my friend is just by clicking a button on her phone. I also have GPS tracking on my phone, so whenever I need to call the police using my cell phone they can tell right where I am even before I give them the information.
  4. The phones signal can be used for tracking you and there are various web sites that offer this service but the service locator can be turned off by dialling a certain number did it on my 02 work phone but you will need to look up this info.
