It depends on the age of your GPS and the software you are using. In the last year or so, most of the companies have been moving towards a standardized .GPX file format. One of the programs that I use and highly recommend is ExpertGPS. It can be used to transfer GPS files from several formats and brands to dissimilar brands and formats. Plus you get to download for free, all topo maps and aerial photos for the US from the Terra Server which is maintained by the USGS and Microsoft. Check out ExpertGPS at the following address.
