NMEA vs/ SiRF?

I'm looking to buy the Garmin iQue M3 GPS system. One of the Cnet reviews says this isnt that good of a choice because the M3 has an old sat com protocol (NMEA). the M5 Model comes with SiRF. My question is... is SiRF really much better than the older NMEA?

  1. Well 95% of gps receivers still use the NMEA protocol . Personaly if you want a Sirf protocol , i 'd go with units using SIRF II or SIRF III , which are updated versions .Lots of folks have had probs with the first versions of Sirf . And for a better review site click this link to get to user forums , alot better info than Cnet .http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=108
  2. You only care about this protocol if you're connecting a GPS to some other device. The M3 is its own navigation package. You're not going to be "plugging" your M3 into something else that will need the GPS positioning data, so it shouldn't matter. That and the fact that there are literally millions of NMEA devices out there, so if you do need to connect, that format will be supported for a long time coming. I own a Palm-based iQue 3600 and have never connected it to another device. I also own a Garmin GPSmap 60 which I do periodically connect to my laptop for a "large format" naviagtion (for passenger use only). They speak using NMEA. I can't see you needing to connect your M3 to a laptop in this manner.
