can someone tell me about GPS systems for cars, how do they work and do they have to be hooked up to anything?

i have onstar and that sucks.
They work by finding their position relative to at least three satelites orbiting earth. Once the GPS system in your car knows its exact latitude and longitude, it only has to find what road is at those coordinates in its database, and it can tell you where you are. I don't think they have to be hooked up; they just need to be able to communicate with the satelites.
What Jen above said is correct. Nothing needs to be hooked up. In that respect it is like the AM/FM radio on your car. It just receives the signal that the satellites broadcast. I will only add that the satellite signal that GPS uses is line-of-sight. If you are in a garage, tunnel, in a heavily forested area, or anyplace that has something that blocks a lot of the sky, the GPS may not work. I have been on mountain tops and my GPS wouldn't work because of cloud cover. Unless you live in New York or other urban area with a lot of tall buildings, this shouldn't be a problem. Once on the open road there should be minimum reception problems.
