What is the best portable GPS system I can buy with a maximum of $400?

I want to put the GPS in my truck to use.

  1. Garmin Venture. Handheld, portable, rugged, and color. You could buy something way cooler, but truly consider what you're going to be using it for. Save some money on the unit itself, and spend that extra $$ on maps or accessories.
  2. Look at the TomTom GPS units (try eBay). It sets up within 30 minutes from the box , a LOT of options to use or ignore and the touch screens are easy to use, their maps have worked great for me, and the voice directions are clear and accurage. I have traveled a lot of the west coast and found almost anything I wanted by simply asking the gps where it was on the touch screen. If you shop (especially if you wait until AFTER xmas) you should get a Nice 710 for that price. (Right now its a bit more) good luck.. (sorry if this sounds like a sales pitch.... I am just pleased with mine)
  3. i would buy a garmin...they are very good...they have a navigation feature (gps), hunting and fishing season, and they are fully water and dust proof =)
  4. I'm a big fan of all Garmin brand units. You would probably really like the new Garmin Nuvi line. It's focus is driving and traveling. Or if you wanted to also use it in outdoor scenarios, the GPSMap 60 serious or GPSMAP 76 series are really nice.
