Portable GPS systems - which brand is the best for the money?

Public Comments

  1. I have a Magellan 300T but I have seen the Magellan 3050T and it is only 350 dollars. They offer some in cell phones and PDA's like the Palm Treo models, but you have to pay for the service. There is no charge for your GPS service with the Magellan.
  2. Garmin street pilot...hands down. i have used it to navigate NY City, DC, Boston, etc. Best on the market.
  3. What do you want to do? Garmin, Tom-Tom, and Magellan are all fine. Some have bigger screens, some have a few more features (remembering routes and waypoints). I have a Garmin handheld that has a 20 hour rechargeable battery. I use it on my motorcycle, in my car, and I can carry it with me as I walk the streets of NYC, Chicago, etc (not in a car). I also take it camping, as it performs as a standard GPS when not in use with city maps. Most other units do not have an internal battery, and only function with a 12VDC power source. Mine cost me $265 on e-bay, new in the box. I also just subscribed to a satellite service that uses the GPS chip in my cell phone (TREO), to give me GPS and turn-by-turn directions right on my phone screen. That only cost me $119 a year, and I already had the phone. Lot's of options, depends on your needs. Email me with your needs, and I can give you my exact model number, some other options, and a link to units for sale on line.
  4. Well, Garmin is the leader in GPS systems, although Magellan, TomTom and others make good systems too. Garmin's StreetPilot line and the new Garmin Nuvi line are best sellers. See http://gps.buyerreports.org for customer reviews on all of these systems and then make your own decision.
