GPS on a cell phone is used to help locate you in case of an emergency. If you dial 911 they can pinpoint your location using the GPS, making it that much faster for EMS or whatever to get there.
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. but i think the one mainly associated with cell phones would be GPRS which stands for GeneralPacket Radio Service. If you have this enabled on your cell, you can communicate to the internet with your phone. like send emails and download stuff. GPS is mainly associated with cars and ships and planes, like for navigation.

This service is not available in all areas, so you may want to check with your local law enforcement before you find yourself in a bind. #2: There are a couple of phones available for Sprint that actually have the capability of giving you turn-by-turn directions as well as a map of where you are right on your cell phone screen. The Sanyo MM8300 features this service. Garmin mobile makes the software and map. You do pay for the service - it's about $10 a month. If you get a chance to see it, then do... It's really cool!
