I have used Microsoft AutoRoute extensively all over Europe. It will plot routes (fastest or cheapest, your choice), and if you go off course it will instantly recalculate your route to the destination. It can be used on a laptop, or you can clip out maps of your own design and download them to a Pocket PC running Pocket Streets (which comes with it). On a laptop, the latest versions talk you through the turns and distances to your destination. Microsoft also offers hundreds of free city maps for Pocket Streets at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/pocketstreets/mapdownload/psmapsearch.aspx The GPS "locator" (receiver) that comes with Microsoft Streets & Trips also works with both AutoRoute and Pocket Streets. The S&T/GPS bundle can be had for as little as $80.
