If you're looking to portability, you probably want to go handheld, which can be used anywhere and in any vehicle. As to what is best, that's open to conjecture. But the web page below rates some of the hand held unit. Have a look.
Magellan road mate is very good and really easy to move from car to car. there is one problem with the one i have and its odd. the thing knows what side road or line i am on as it shows that on the map but if i want to go to a place that is on a side road or line it wont tell me how to get to it . once i have got there i can press a key and it remembers the place and will direct me back if i ever want to go to that same spot . i asked them about the side road thing and i was told that they do not have side roads and lines there instead all the roads have names that was news to me. the device does really well if you are going to a place that is on a street or road that has a name such as Mary drive. in blah land and the number say 45 Mary drive in blah land that it does fantastic at . the device talks tells you when to turn how far to go and so on i like it all but the trouble it has with the side roads and lines . i am soon going to down load some new maps i hope they have the side roads on them but i don't really think they will so that is Magellan roadmate the price has gone down on them big time so i don't know what the price is now but less then 1000 for sure .
